I'm so confused!

RV LIFE:
I'm so confused!
     What time is is?
          What day is it?
               Where am I?
Yep, that happens quite often!
Ms. Cozy Be Gone has just retired and is now Full Time in a Casita with her husband. Now that is love! She was blogging about not knowing what day it was. "Watching the clock, I don’t miss, but I sure like to know what day it is. "  I think most who are retired can relate to that! Scott bought a day clock for our RV before we were even on the road. I laughed and thought it was silly. But...he was right! Yes, I'm humble enough to admit, Scott can be right.

Our first few months in the RV, we would forget what day it was and I'd look at my computer to find out. Scott would quietly remind me of the day clock on the wall. It took us almost a year to finally get into the habit of looking at the clock not only for what time it is but what day it is also!
So, now that we've gotten past that hurdle and know "when", we now have to learn how to realize where we are.
Just this morning, I was looking at a brochure for the North Olympic Peninsula and saw an ad for a Lavender Farm open 7 days a week, free, etc. Hmmm, now that the Lavender Festival is over, it would be a good time to visit that farm. Even though Sequim is 25-35 minutes away, it would be a nice place to see and experience. Do I want to make the drive? (I know it's not much of a drive, but we tend to stay very close to home once we're settled at our site.) Oh, wait! Never mind. We're in Neah Bay, not Port Angeles. Geeze, this happens frequently. Maybe I need a chalkboard on the wall and I'll write WHERE we are. Once we are inside the RV, it is home and we can be anywhere and still feel at home....because we are.
FT RV'r, Susan from On the Road blog, has the same "where are we problem". She recently posted,
"For us, the two Full timer mottoes really hold true:

Our 5th wheel really has become our home- as Paul says- once we come inside and close the door- we’re home, no matter what town we happen to be in.  And sadly, too often we forget where we are!"

I look at the map on our blog and I almost have a panic attack. I see how far away we are from our "familiar" area, meaning the East Coast. We are pretty much at the total opposite of the US from my parents in FL. It's an odd feeling realizing that if we needed to get back to family on the East Coast, it would not be a simple task. I'm used to a 2 hr. plane ride to my parents. Here in Neah Bay, WA, I don't know how far the nearest Nat'l airport is and then it would be much more than a 2 hr trip.

Our neighbors in this park were super nice. That comes in handy when the sites are so close. (I'm sorry, Zeus' parents, I don't think we ever exchanged names.)
First our next "door" neighbors gave Devin & Lyla their leftover steak. They have a beautiful German Shepherd, Zeus that they don't feed table scraps to. I wish I had gotten a photo. He is truly a beautiful dog inside and out. His face was so full of expression. I just couldn't stop hugging him. Devin was very jealous! Then they shared their firewood with us. Everyone just seems to leave their wood and pass it on to the friends they made nearby. Another neighbor 2 sites down gave us a beautiful watermelon when they left.

After cutting this up, we ended up with 2 gallon sized zip lock bags. Yum! That'll be a nice evening snack. Much better, well better for me than ice cream.

We are certainly the odd folks here in Neah Bay. First we are not from the Makah Tribe and second we are not fishermen. Salmon is the name of the game up here. Men & women campout. The boat is more important that the shelter. Out come the chest freezers and vacuum sealers! Yep, it seems the majority of sites have chest freezers, even if they are only staying for the weekend. A whole other type of life up here.

Thank goodness TdF (Tour de France) is finally done. I am so sick of the commentator's voice. My husband has been watching this religiously for the 21 days? it's been on. The only thing "worse" is when he used to watch America's Cup. I think that's what it's called.

PETS:
The Ratkins are doing well. When they first arrived, I thought they were pretty boring. They just cuddled with each other and slept all day. Finally after about 4 days and various hand fed treats, they are much more attune to what's going on. They have 3 levels in their cage. I gave them some watermelon I cut up. Wow! They grabbed that right out of my hand and gobbled it up! They are really cute! Devin is still fascinated by them, but has calmed down somewhat. We still don't trust him loose while we're sleeping. I don't want to wake up to a Ratkin cage on the floor and the little ones scurrying around trying to keep away from Devin.
So where do they go when we travel? We have our two 60+ pound dogs in the backseat of the pick up truck and our parrot is in a small pet carrier in between Scott & I. Where can we possibly fit the little ones? Thankfully "Mama Keiter" said they just wedge them in the 5th wheel and they seem fine. So in between the toilet and the wall they were stashed. The cage was still upright and in the same spot when we arrived and all was well.

"I tried to leave a blog comment but I can't get my iPad to jump through the right hoops...anyway, I was reading your ratkins update aloud to the kids and Joel piped up with his best imitation of Patches's voice (as we imagine it might be) and says, "hey Chino, why are we in Forks again?  Weren't we just here?  We don't need forks for watermelon. Since we were given a LOT of firewood by our neighbors, we've been having a campfire every day. The weather is perfect for it. Lyla can be quite the cuddle bug when we are outside.

She sure helps to keep us warm. Yes, it is chilly here! Notice Scott is wearing a fleece jacket.

BROWSING THE WWW:
Anyone notice my new widget on the left side of the blog? It states our current temps at where we are! I wish more bloggers would at least state where they are at the top of the post (like I do). I read so many RV blogs that I can't keep track of where you all are unless you state it on each post. I saw another blogger always posted where, morning temp and evening temp. I appreciate that info. It enables me to better relate/understand their post.

CRAFTS:
I'm in the middle of crafting. I'm still working on my crocheted 1850 Old South "bed doll" gown. I have to make lots of rows of ruffles using a teeny metal crochet needle and cotton crochet thread (not yarn). This is an RV project. No way could I crochet with that tiny needle and thread in the bouncy truck.

This is the skirt part.

I'm also working on a knitted tee called Sophie by C2Knits with a circular yoke. I used the hand dyed silk yarn I purchased in Astoria for the yoke.

I'm using Caron Simply Soft acrylic for the body. This is a travel project. Worsted weight yarn with size 7 needles. Plenty of forgiveness for the bumpy ride.
And I've finally used up all that damned acrylic red yarn! My last project with that was a heart garland for a Valentine's Day decoration. It will pack easily and is not breakable. Photos at a later post.

RESTAURANT REVIEW:
Warmhouse Restaurant, Neah Bay, WA
Our rating 4 out of 5
Yes, there is a limited menu. Yes, the service is slow. But...what we ate was delicious, and the service was friendly.
We at here twice and both times only had the cod and clams, plus fries and onion rings.
Fried Cod: Flavorful breading and the cod was sweet and moist.
Fried Clams: These are equal to my #1 place for clams in NJ, the Keyport Fishery in Keyport, NJ. The clams were fairly large, not too chewy and nice and sweet.
French Fries: These were above par. They may have been fresh, but not quite sure. They did seem to have a light coating which I would prefer left off.
Onion rings: Very good. Nice breading. I think the same as the fish breading. Onions were super sweet.
I will miss these great fried clams when we leave Neah Bay.

Rating should probably be closer to a 3.5, but the staff were so friendly I rounded up to 4.
We stopped here two time and both times they were very busy. A lot of locals which means it has to be good. Pat's Place has a very limited menu. The basis is Indian Fry Bread. You can have that served either as a desert with honey, sugar, preserves on top or served as a meal with taco ground beef, tomatoes, cheese, etc. on top. We opted for the Indian taco. Which is the Indian fry bread with taco ingredients on top. We had to eat it with a fork. I would have preferred being able to fold the bread and eat more like a sandwich. But overall, it was a good meal, served with major hospitality.

We had the chocolate cream pie (home made). That was good. Wish it had real whipped cream instead of cool whip topping.

Sites: Most sites are pretty close together. No picnic table. Have a fire ring. The sites furthest from the office have a nice shaded area behind your RV.

Sites are tight. Just enough room to put out awning.

Laundry: Sufficient. Run down room in need of paint and some holes patched. 2 washer and 2 dryers were old, but worked fine. Table for folding. $1.50 wash $1.50 dry for 45 minutes
Pets: Pet friendly. No rules for pets. A few dogs off leash and wondering the park. Left my dogs alone.
WiFi: Yes, free, but pretty slow.
Verizon Internet: Average
Sprint Internet: No service
Verizon cell: Worked fine.
AT&T cell: No service
Book Exchange: Small book exchange in laundry.
Activities: Nothing planned. But marina across the street for lots of Salmon fishing.

Area/Town/Sights: Cape Flattery is the most NW point of the continental US. Makah Museum. Fishing.
Comments: Since there is not much choice, this is one of the better campgrounds. There are also some really nice cabins newly built. They were 85% full the whole week we were here.

Hike to nowhere

RV LIFE:
Referencing back to Elwha Dam in Port Angeles, we took a really nice & fairly easy hike to see nothing. Well, that is to say, we saw where the Elwha Dam USED to be.

The Elwha Dam was torn down because part of the agreement when it was built was that an alternate route would be established for the Salmon that travel along the river. They never followed through, so "off with their heads!", I'm mean down with the dam!

Along the way we found this odd looking thing. I'm thinking it it would make a nice fountain or planter! Do you know what it is?

An old ceramic conductor? capacitor? insualtor?

These were the things on top of the electrical posts with all the wires coming out of them. Some still exist. Lyla kept getting in the way of the shot, so I had to take a few photos while Scott was losing not only his strength, but patience. This thing weighed about 50 pounds and was awkward to hold up. 

Scott was rewarded for his patience by finding a mini geocache.

Poor Lyla is getting old. Our baby is 9 yrs old. She's got a weak back leg that slightly drags. She just plopped down during our hike for a needed rest.

PETS:
Poor Devin, something has him spooked outside. He usually gets me up in the morning anywhere between 6-7am. I tie him out, he does his business and then will sit in a bubble chair for at least an hour, just watching the world go by. He has his quiet time and I have mind inside with a cup of coffee and a book.
Since arriving at Neah Bay, he does not want to be outside alone. All we can think of is there are barking dogs beyond the woods and there are a couple of Labs that roam the campground off leash. They seem to be afraid of other dogs and wary of people. They will warm up to people, but not if I have the dogs with me.
So, because he hasn't been getting me up to go out, I've been sleeping until between 8-9:30am! I hate that! What a waste. I love getting up early in the morning for my own private quiet time.
Since Devin isn't using his brain outside, he decided to do some rearranging inside.

We had severely downsized our dog toy collection when we purged things from our house. We had 3 baskets of toys in different areas of the house. it sure is easy to accumulate too many toys again. Squeaky toys and good dog biscuits are my weakness. It's now getting to the point that I'll have to go by the rule, "an item in, an item out" for dog toys also.

BOOK REVIEW:
An Irish Country Village by Patrick Taylor
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a sweet easy read. It's difficult to believe that this is taking place in fairly modern times. I have never experienced a doctor making a house call in my 56 years.
A country Dr. and his up and coming 2nd Dr. straight out of medical school.
Just think of Mayberry in Ireland.  The Senior Dr. is like Andy. He fixes situations & keeps the peace, even if it may be in a round about or unconventional way.
We get to know the people of Ballybucklebo. I can't help but smile every time I read that name. We meet the down & outs, the greedy upper class, the kind upper class, the hard working shop girl, etc. We meet patients with serious illnesses and easier cured illnesses. We go along on the house calls and root for the young Dr. to make the correct diagnosis.
Nothing exciting about this book, but an enjoyable vacation from murder mysteries, love stories, and horror.

Lost Light by Michael Connelly
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Listened to this years ago, 2005. Narrator Len Cariou did a great job. I think I'm just tired of the harry Bosch character.

Dark Shadows, 2012
Director: Tim Burton
Starring: Johnny Depp & Michelle Pfeiffer
My rating 3 out of 5
If you really like Tim Burton/Johnny Depp movies then it's worth watching. But this one is definitely not one of their better productions.
Since I was a huge fan of Dark Shadows, the TV soap opera in the late 1960's, this barely follows that storyline. The names of the characters are much the same, but that is about the only similarity.
It was still fun to have all those 4pm Dark Shadows shows brought back to the front of my memories. Oh the beautiful witch, Angelique.

They did not include Quentin Collins in the 2012 version. Oh the crush I had on Quentin and his long, dark sideburns.

 And of course, Barnabas, the main vampire character.

Second Anniversary!

RV LIFE:
Yep, July 18 makes 2 years of full time living in an RV. Time really does fly. I remember the misery of purging our house. The misery of staying at Pine Cone "Resort" at $51. a night while having our house fixed up for sale. But, I also remember the glee as another pile of our "precious stuff" was taken away, either by neighbors, freecyclers, charity, junk removers or to the bulk garbage. Even now I feel myself calming at the thought of all that stuff GONE! I really do not want to move back into a house. I know we'll just start filling it up...because we have the room.
I am VERY happy with my limited crafts instead of a whole room of "someday" projects, but "someday" never arrives. I love the fact that I can't buy more yarn or more craft supplies because they are on sale. Nope, just no room in the RV.
I love that I can't buy cutsy kitschy items I see at fairs. Just no room! Granted, I do have a moment or two of wistfully, wishing that piece of artwork could be mine. But I am soon over it, thinking of all the money I would eventually spend and all the "stuff" I would accumulate over time if I had the room.
I am PERFECTLY CONTENT with what I have. My life would not be better by buying that cute little doggie yard ornament or that beautiful skein of yarn. I have real dogs and I have PLENTY of beautiful yarn. Ahhhhhh. RV life is very good!

I am currently sitting outside in the shade under our awing. I have a jacket on and my fingers are chilled and my toes are on the cold side. I am so glad we planned to be in the Pacific NW for the summer! It is 70° here, 67° in the shade. In Neptune, NJ where we used to live it is 91°! Anything over 80° is too hot for me. Ahhhhhh, RV life is very good.

I've... well, we've been going places separately more often. Mostly because if we can't take the dogs, we don't feel like crating them, so it's easier for one of us to stay home. But also, as long as the RV park is decent and quiet, we really enjoy our time at home. I went to the Lavender Fest alone. I could have brought the dogs, but it was easier just to leave them with Scott. I'm glad I went alone. I was able to go at my own pace. There really wasn't much to interest Scott, except the food vendors and they were nothing special. So I could take as long as I wanted to ponder whether to purchase an item or not. I could eat when I wanted and relax to listen to the music or not. It was all up to just me.

Back at Point Hudson RV Park in Port Townsend, the sites were close together, but we had lovely neighbors. Each evening after their cocktail hour, Mike? (I'm sorry, I forgot his name), Maryanne's husband would cook dinner on the grill. I was usually outside with my own cocktail and on the computer. The first night, I couldn't resist. I said whatever he was cooking smelled delicious. He had made a marinade. He gave me a sampling of his oh so moist grilled chicken. Another night, he gave me a sampling of his baked beans and asked if it needed anything. I felt some diced onions would be a nice touch. Well, he did ask, so I told him. He thanked me and added the onions.
The next day they were given some fresh crab from a local. It sure pays to be friendly. Again as I sit outside I see Maryanne's husband cooking. I told him to not let me sample them unless he wants to kill me. (I'm allergic to crab, shrimp, lobster). He said he'd give a sample to Scott.

SIGHTS:
Lavender Festival, Sequim, WA (Pronounced squim)
Well, I can check that off my list! Check & done! I was so insistent in getting up to the Lavender Fest since we were in the area. The good news is this enabled us to experience the wonderful town of Port Townsend. The bad news is that the Fest was no big deal. Really, I'm not that into Lavender. It's nice and yes, I have the spray for our pillows at night, and yes, we have a little sachet that we shake once in a while and the fragrance fills the dog smelly rv. And yes, thanks to Diane, my former Tuesday night, Ice Cream socializing knitting group, spinner of my Setters fur, knitting friend, I have some in a few of my bags of yarn.

I don't like the taste of lavender, so I'm not interested in lavender & spices, lavender ice cream, lavender lemonade nor lavender marinade. Also, I still have plenty of hand, face and body lotions to last a couple of more years, so alas, I resisted the purchase of lavender body creams. Yes, two years full timing and I still have face moisturizer, body lotions, unopened makeup from my stock while living in a sticks & brick house. Although, I have gone from a large tub down to a small tub, so there is progress.
RV life side note: Every time I empty another container my heart leaps with happiness. (Doesn't take much to make me happy). A little more room to either fill or leave blank so it's easier to get to our other "stuff". Why do I have a tub full of envelopes and note cards? Because I have a slight obsession with school supplies and stationery and pens. I may send out 5-10 envelopes a year. So I'll be dragging that tub of envelopes around till the end of my lifetime. So fine friends and family, please start a prayer circle, or send some Setter Zenn, or subliminal thoughts of persuasion, or comments to persuade me to PURGE that stupid tub of envelopes!

I will return now to the previous fascinating subject of the Lavender Festival. Please do not misunderstand, the Festival was not bad. I just played it up to be more in my mind. If you are in the general area this time next year, go ahead and visit. It's free and you DON'T have to leave your doggies at home. Dogs are allowed.
The festival had lots and lots and lots of jewelry vendors, some expensive, some reasonable. A few knitters and crocheters had anywhere from children's character hats to felted hats to beautiful sweaters. I found one knit/crochet vendor very impressive. She made a type of shoulder poncho that was just above chest length in front and longer in the back. It was a nice accessory to cover your shoulders without it getting in the way of movement. I looked all over Ravelry and can't find the pattern. Sigh.
There were a couple of metal yard art vendors that had a lot of dog yard ornaments. Ohhhh, so tempting! I so glad there were no Setters, although the Golden was a close call. I just kept thinking, that I'd have to set it up and pack it away...somewhere each time we moved. Nope, don't think I'll buy it.
There were a few food vendors. All typical. I had a Gyro.
There are two locations for the Festival. One is in mid town and the other is about a mile South. I only happened to find the second one because I was looking for the Sequim Dog Park. The alternate Lavender Fest was on the same street. Both areas had live music also.

Sequim is a busy little town. There are lots of little shops to interest the tourist. If we were closer, I'd probably take a walk through with the dogs and window shop. Parking is not all that convenient, especially for a dually pick up truck. But park somewhere in the neighborhood and just walk to the main street. Sequim does not have the charm of Port Townsend. All the shops have new facades and all very clean looking.
Since we are only in this area for 2.5 days, we've not really had a chance to see much. While passing through Port Angeles, we were impressed by their actual Port. HUGE cargo ships to be seen. Very impressive.

PETS:
Ratkins update. Chino & Patches are feeling more comfortable in their temporary home. At first, I thought they were really boring. They just snuggled in their cardboard shelter all day. I noticed at night, that they would venture out to eat. I am constantly worried that with their age, they will "pass on" during my shift. Chino has personality plus. She/he (I didn't think to look or ask) has an endearing tilt to her head from probably the after effect of a vestibular disorder. Chino is also quick, quick,quick! As soon as I open the cage door, she is there trying to climb out. Both tolerate holding them. Chino just wants to move and Patches is more curious and always smelling my fingers for what new treat I may give them.
They are both much more active during the day now. It's so cute when they are sleeping and I touch them to wake them up. They are so human like in that they yawn, stretch and look around to get their bearings. The yawning is absolutely adorable! Yes, I really like pet rats.

Scott has pointed out that I have been snoring lately. Sometimes it is so loud that it keeps him up. He keeps threatening to make me sleep in my rocker easy chair.
There's an app you can download that makes your device into a sound activated recorder. It's called Sleep Talk Recorder. Also on this site, real recordings have been uploaded. They are short and funny. The silly and nonsensical thinks we say in our sleep. Check it out.

Also did you notice my jumping for joy Anniversary sign and my new cool (or maybe annoying) signature? Glitter Graphics is a fun site to create all kinds of moving, glittering fonts. And it's easy to use and free!
